What is thomasville heights projects?

The Thomasville Heights projects, also known as Thomasville Heights—Atlanta Housing Authority Project (THAHP), was a public housing community in Southeast Atlanta, Georgia. The projects were built in 1952 and were comprised of several two-story and three-story brick buildings. At its peak, the community housed approximately 780 families.

However, the Thomasville Heights projects were plagued by high crime rates, poverty, and deteriorating living conditions. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) designated the projects as a "troubled property" due to multiple failed inspections. As a result, the Atlanta Housing Authority (AHA) had to make significant repairs to the community, including replacing roofs, heating systems, and plumbing.

In 2014, the AHA announced plans to demolish the Thomasville Heights projects as part of a larger effort to revitalize the neighborhood. The community was replaced with a mixed-income development called Villages of East Lake, which includes affordable housing units, market-rate apartments, and community amenities such as a YMCA, a charter school, and a golf course.

The Villages of East Lake has been recognized as a successful model for promoting mixed-income housing and neighborhood revitalization. Today, the former site of the Thomasville Heights projects is a thriving community that provides affordable housing and opportunities for economic mobility to its residents.
